Connecting the Past to the Future

Visit Herff Farm to connect to the past, present and future of living in harmony with the land.

Herff Farm is a gathering place offering public events, community gardens, a Farmers Market and hiking opportunities. It also serves as a natural laboratory for sustainable modern living—a place where children and adults learn how to protect our precious natural resources.

Historically significant and protecting an irreplaceable freshwater source, the Herff Farm is a vibrant hub that provides access to outdoor learning for children and a model for land stewardship for the greater community.

The work we do to protect the 66 acres of Herff Farm is funded by generous gifts from members of our community who recognize the value of fresh air and being outdoors. If you’d like to contribute to the work we are doing to keep preserve the legacy of Herff Farm please consider making a donation today.

Education at Herff Farm

The Nest Nature School provides a place-based preschool experience for children ages 3 to 5, blending play, social-emotional development, and early academics within the natural landscape of the farm.

Our Bee Program, developed in partnership with local beekeepers, introduces students to hive life, pollination, and the essential role pollinators play in sustaining healthy ecosystems. Through guided lessons and safe observation, learners build confidence and curiosity in the field.

Sustainable Living Education extends learning to students and adults alike, offering hands-on experiences in gardening, farming, beekeeping, and water conservation that encourage lifelong stewardship.

Land & Agriculture

Herff Farm’s gardens, including the Inspiration, Teaching, Children’s, and Pollinator Gardens, demonstrate what can thrive in the Texas Hill Country using organic practices and native plants. These spaces serve as outdoor classrooms and working examples of regenerative land care.

Beyond the gardens, native prairie grasses and a designated wildlife corridor provide habitat for birds and pollinators while offering visitors opportunities for walking, reflection, and connection to the land.

Together, these landscapes preserve the agricultural character of the property while supporting education, conservation, and community access.

Historic Homestead

The Herff Farm Homestead traces its roots to 1854, when German immigrant Ferdinand Herff established one of Boerne’s earliest European settlements. Once a 10,000-acre working farm, the property now preserves 60 acres at the confluence of the Cibolo and Menger Creeks and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

Today, the restored historic barn, adjoining amphitheater, and central Learning Village serve as a shared campus for education, community gatherings, and seasonal events, connecting our agricultural past with hands-on learning and conservation in the present.

We want to thank the Pat and Tom Frost Foundation, The Summerlee Foundation, and Texas Historical Foundation for supporting restoration projects for the Historic Herff Farm Homestead.

Farmers Market

Each Saturday, Herff Farm comes alive with fresh harvests, handmade goods, and neighbors gathering in celebration of local food and craftsmanship. Stroll the market, explore the grounds, and experience a Hill Country tradition connected to land and community.
